Why Your Indoor Cat Might Still Get Feline Panleukopenia and When It's Considered Out of the Woods

Even cats that are exclusively kept indoors can contract feline panleukopenia (FPV), also known as feline distemper, if they haven't been vaccinated. This is because owners can inadvertently bring the virus home on their clothes or shoes, exposing their feline companions. Generally, if a cat with panleukopenia survives the first seven days, their prognosis improves significantly.

Indoor cats are susceptible to panleukopenia if they are unvaccinated or if their post-vaccination antibody titers are insufficient. While they might be safe within the confines of your home, you could still unintentionally carry the virus inside. To prevent this, make sure to vaccinate your cat regularly and check their antibody levels post-vaccination. Adequate antibody titers indicate good resistance to the virus and reduce the risk of contracting panleukopenia.

Feline panleukopenia is a highly lethal infectious disease, especially in kittens. It primarily manifests as gastrointestinal symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and bloody stools. Vaccination is an effective way to protect cats from the virus. Kittens should receive their first vaccine at around 8 weeks of age, with boosters every 28 days for a total of three doses to complete the primary immunization.

When is a Cat Considered Safe After Panleukopenia?

If a cat with panleukopenia receives proper veterinary care, surviving the first seven days post-diagnosis is usually a good sign. During this time, nutritional support to boost their metabolism will aid their recovery.

The panleukopenia virus typically has a life cycle of about seven days. During treatment, cats often receive monoclonal antibodies and interferon, which inhibits virus replication and allows the body to clear the virus.
