When Can You Take Home a Baby Sugar Glider After It Leaves the Pouch?

It's generally recommended to wait until a sugar glider is about one month out of the pouch before taking it home. Newly emerged joeys are still heavily reliant on their mothers. These tiny, blind babies need to be close to their mother's nipple to feed, and if they wander too far and can't find it, they can easily starve. After about a month, they can be transitioned to hand-feeding, making it a much safer time to bring them into a new home. To ensure the joey receives proper nutrition and thrives, taking them too early is not advisable. Around the one-month mark, sugar gliders can usually be hand-fed with formula, which is the ideal time to bring them home. This transition also eases the burden on the mother, preventing nutritional depletion from breastfeeding. Mother sugar gliders typically have a gestation period of about 14-16 days and usually give birth to 1-2 joeys.
