Is 12 Years Old a Long Life for a Cat?

For a domestic cat, living to 12 years old isn't considered particularly long-lived. Some cats can live to 15 years, or even around 20 years. However, for feral or stray cats, living to 12 years old is considered a very long life. Most pet cats are well cared for by their owners and often treated like royalty within the home. Generally, pet cats have a longer lifespan, with an average of 8-12 years. A cat that lives to 12 years old is not considered exceptionally long-lived. A cat at one year old is equivalent to a human in their youth, two years old is adulthood, around six years is middle age, and 10 years is when they start entering their senior years. A 12-year-old cat is similar to a human in their 60s, but some cats can live beyond 15 years, and some even reach 20 years, which would be similar to a centenarian human, truly a long life for a cat.
