A dog's sudden, unexplained rapid panting and tongue protrusion can be caused by a variety of factors, including high ambient temperatures, strenuous exercise, respiratory illnesses, and heart or lung issues. Heat and Thermoregulation Dogs have underdeveloped sweat glands and primarily rely on panting and tongue protrusion to regulate their body temperature. In hot environments, rapid panting and sticking out their tongue are essential mechanisms for heat dissipation. Physical Exertion Following intense physical activity, it's normal for dogs to experience rapid panting due to increased body temperature.
