What to Do When Your Cat Has a Rectal Prolapse: Can It Heal on Its Own?

When a cat experiences rectal prolapse, the first thing owners should do is identify the underlying cause. A rectal prolapse occurs when part of the rectum protrudes out of the anus. While it might be tempting to try and resolve the issue at home, this is a situation that requires veterinary attention, as it will not heal on its own. Rectal prolapse is often a secondary condition caused by persistent diarrhea or constipation. It's crucial to address these primary issues to prevent further complications. If your cat is experiencing diarrhea or constipation, seek veterinary care immediately. Prolonged prolapse can lead to tissue necrosis (death), which can complicate treatment and recovery. To help keep the prolapsed tissue clean before getting to the vet, gently clean the area with a diluted antiseptic solution, such as metronidazole or a 2% boric acid solution.
