Recognizing Pregnancy in Parrots: Signs and Symptoms

When a parrot is pregnant, several noticeable changes occur. One of the most prominent is the swelling of the abdomen. You'll also observe a decrease in their activity level, increased stool size, and a tendency to beg for food from the male parrot.

If you keep a pair of parrots, one male and one female, you might observe signs of pregnancy after some time. The most obvious sign is the enlarged abdomen, which will appear significantly different from its usual size. You can also gently palpate (touch) the parrot's abdomen, where you might feel a round, hard object if she is pregnant. However, be very careful when touching her, so you do not harm her.

Pregnant parrots will exhibit changes in their behavior and activity levels. Typically active birds, they will become less energetic and prefer to remain quietly in their cage. They will also show reduced interest in human interaction or play.

Changes in the parrot's droppings can also be an indicator of pregnancy. An increase in the size of their feces suggests they could be pregnant. The size of their droppings will be close to the size of a coin. Another sign is the noticeable expansion and contraction of the parrot's cloaca (vent), which can also be used to assess if she is pregnant.
