How to Recognize and Handle Intestinal Blockage in Dogs
If your dog is experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, elevated temperature, or abdominal swelling, it could indicate an intestinal blockage. It’s recommended that owners try methods like applying a warm compress to the abdomen, administering oil, or performing an enema to help the dog pass stools.

Symptoms of Intestinal Blockage in Dogs
1. Vomiting and Diarrhea
Intestinal blockages in dogs often manifest with vomiting. The closer the blockage is to the upper intestines, the more frequent the vomiting, often consisting of undigested food, stomach fluids, or bile. If the blockage is located in the lower intestines, the dog may vomit less frequently but may also experience diarrhea.
2. Elevated Body Temperature
Dehydration is another symptom of intestinal blockage. Severe vomiting causes rapid fluid loss, leading to an increased heart rate, elevated body temperature, skin wrinkling, and loss of skin elasticity—all signs of dehydration. If not promptly addressed with fluid replacement, organ damage, shock, and even death can occur.
3. Abdominal Swelling
If the blockage occurs in the distal part of the intestines, the abdomen may visibly swell due to gas accumulation. When lightly touched, the abdomen will feel tense and the dog may show signs of pain.
How to Handle Intestinal Obstruction in Dogs
1. Inducing Vomiting
If the blockage is recent and not severe, inducing vomiting can help to clear the intestinal tract.
2. Warm Compresses
For mild cases, where the obstruction is small, applying a warm compress to the dog's abdomen, coupled with gentle massage, can help to encourage the passage of the blockage.
3. Administering Oil
In the initial stages of intestinal blockage, administering paraffin oil or cooking oil can help lubricate the intestinal tract. A dose of 100-150 ml once daily for about half a week can aid in facilitating bowel movements.
4. Enema
Using an enema solution (such as those from a pre-packaged enema), insert the nozzle into the dog’s anus and release the liquid. Holding the dog upside down can sometimes help gravity assist with the process, and it can help to pass the obstruction within approximately an hour.Read more here:Pet Breeds
