How Cold Can a Red-Eared Slider Tolerate?

Red-eared sliders are remarkably cold-hardy, capable of surviving in temperatures as low as -4 degrees Celsius (25 degrees Fahrenheit) or even lower. They commonly hibernate in environments around 5 degrees Celsius (41 degrees Fahrenheit). This exceptional cold tolerance, combined with their striking appearance, makes them a popular choice as high-end ornamental pets.

Native to North America, red-eared sliders are aquatic turtles found in lakes, rivers, and ponds. Their plastron (bottom shell) is typically yellow, sometimes with red, black, or reddish-brown markings. There's a variety of breeds, differing in size and shape. These turtles have black or olive-colored skin, with yellow and red stripes on their neck, limbs, and tail. They also exhibit yellow markings on their head. Male red-eared sliders are characterized by long front claws and thick tails, while females tend to be larger with shorter front claws and thinner, shorter tails. Red-eared sliders are omnivorous, feeding on snails, insects, crayfish, tadpoles, small fish, carrion, algae, and aquatic plants. Young sliders are primarily carnivorous, shifting towards a more plant-based diet as they mature, though they may occasionally consume meat. In captivity, they can be fed lean meat, animal organs, small fish, shrimp, earthworms, watermelon, leafy greens, and bananas. These turtles are typically active, with an inquisitive and sometimes assertive nature. However, they are generally peaceful with their own species. They have high adaptability to different environments and are able to hibernate. With proper care, the survival rate of red-eared sliders is very high.

Red-eared sliders are resilient pets. They can survive in below-freezing temperatures without dying and can even hibernate for extended periods without issue. While the precise minimum temperature they can tolerate isn't definitively recorded, it’s known that they can withstand temperatures of -4 degrees Celsius (25 degrees Fahrenheit) without problems, and potentially even lower. Beyond their cold resistance, these turtles are also highly heat-tolerant. They can thrive in temperatures as high as 42 degrees Celsius (108 degrees Fahrenheit), maintaining their activity levels and normal life functions. Related resource:Pet Training
