Will a Malinois Return Home After Running Away?

It's possible for a Malinois to return home on its own after running away. However, if it's picked up by someone or encounters danger, it's unlikely to find its way back. To ensure their safety, owners should always keep doors securely locked when caring for their dogs and use a leash when walking them.

A lost Malinois has a chance of returning home by itself. Dogs have highly developed olfactory systems, which allow them to follow scent trails, and they also possess excellent vision and memory. After getting lost, they can find their way back to where they were last, or even home. Therefore, if your Malinois goes missing, you can wait for a while at the spot where it was last seen, while calling out its name. However, if your dog doesn't return after a prolonged period, you should start actively searching for it.

In urban environments, dogs are often picked up by others or can face dangers that might prevent them from returning home. Therefore, besides securing your doors and using a leash while walking, it is also wise to spay or neuter your dog if you don’t intend to breed it. This procedure can prevent future runaways motivated by mating instincts and enhance your dog’s overall safety. This should reduce the likelihood of your dog trying to escape in the first place.
