Signs Your Yorkshire Terrier Loves You and When They Recognize Their Owner

If your Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie) loves you, they'll show it in various ways, including exposing their belly, rubbing against you, staring at you affectionately, wagging their tail when they see you, and playfully chewing on your shoes and socks.

1. Exposing Their Belly to You

A dog's belly is a very vulnerable area. If your Yorkie frequently lies down in front of you, exposing their belly, and even lets you pet it, it's a sign of trust and affection. This indicates they absolutely trust you.

2. Rubbing Against You

Dogs use scent to mark their territory. If your Yorkie often rubs against you, it's another sign they like you. They usually only do this with people they're familiar with, and it's their way of leaving their scent on you, signaling to other dogs that you are their owner.

3. Liking to Stare at You

Eye contact can have various meanings for dogs. For example, if a stranger makes eye contact with a dog, it can be seen as a challenge. However, if your Yorkie frequently stares at you, they're likely curious about what you're doing, and it’s one of the ways they express their affection.

4. Wagging Their Tail When They See You

If your Yorkie wags their tail enthusiastically whenever they see you, it proves they truly love you. It’s a way they show friendliness and a desire to be close to you.

5. Enjoying Chewing on Your Shoes and Socks

Your shoes and socks carry your strong scent, which can make your Yorkie feel especially secure. That's why they might like to chew on them. This behavior, while sometimes troublesome, is another sign of their love for you. If you want to prevent your Yorkie from chewing your shoes, be sure to store them properly.

When Do Dogs Recognize Their Owner?

Dogs generally start to recognize their owner around 3 months of age. Once a dog recognizes its owner, they'll exhibit high levels of obedience, immediately responding when their owner calls their name, and obeying any commands given by the owner. They’ll be very receptive to training. Furthermore, the dog will show protective behavior towards their owner. If the owner is in danger, the dog will quickly come to protect them. They might also stay close by while the owner sleeps. Dogs are extremely reliant on and trusting of their chosen owner and will want to follow them around constantly, craving attention and affection. If the owner is not around, the dog will often exhibit signs of anxiety.
