How Many Days Is Half a Year for a Cat?

A cat is considered to be half a year old approximately 180 days after birth. The calculation of a cat's age from birth is the same as that of humans; about 180 days after they are born, it is considered half a year. However, the way we calculate a cat's age compared to a human's age is different. The average lifespan of cats is mostly between 15-20 years. So, when they are six months old, they are roughly equivalent to a 10-year-old human.

More and more people are choosing cats as their pets and hope they can be companions for many years. Previously, the average lifespan of a cat was around 13 years. However, in recent years, due to advancements in veterinary medicine and the improvement of living standards for cats, their average lifespan has reached about 15-20 years. Generally, a kitten is considered to be half a year old about 180 days after birth, which is 6 months, the same as our human way of measuring time. But a cat's six months is different from a human's six months because a cat's six months is roughly equivalent to about 10 years in human years. Some owners might not remember the exact birth date of their cats after they are born, and therefore not know which feeding method to use. Thus, it's important to understand how to determine a kitten’s age.

How to Determine a Kitten's Age

Knowing a kitten's age is a very important reference for future feeding and care. Also, generally speaking, artificially fed kittens may look smaller than breastfed kittens. The specific standards for determining a kitten’s age can be referenced as follows:

1. Umbilical Cord

Newborn kittens typically complete umbilical cord separation within 3 days and gradually grow.

2. Eyes

Based on data from many cats, kittens will slowly open their eyes around 10 days after birth to observe the world. If a kitten can open its eyes but doesn’t follow your finger movements, then the kitten is probably around 2 weeks old.

3. Ears

A kitten's ear canals are closed at birth and will gradually open between 5-8 days, standing upright around 15-20 days.

4. Teeth

The correct order of tooth growth is incisors erupting around 10-15 days, canines at 15-25 days, and molars at 30-40 days.Source:5D Pet World
